The First Annual Southwest Virginia STEM Summit PBS Learning Media 3rd Annual Learning Science Workshop Research and Innovation for Enhancing Achievement and Equity

The purpose of this first annual Southwest Virginia STEM Summit is to recognize and celebrate the current exemplary programs --- and to create a network of STEM educators, employers, and advocates who want to know more about what is going on, facilitate new connections to advance the excellent work already in progress and to invent new initiatives for our region, and initiate a systematic effort that we can learn from each other and ensure the ongoing availability of STEM learning opportunities for all of the citizens in Southwest Virginia! WGBH, in partnership with Raytheon company, has launched an exciting new collection on PBS LearningMedia. The collection, which draws in part upon Design Squad resources, features an incredible array of edia-rich tools videos, interactives, lesson plans, and the like to support K-12 educators as they take on the Next Generation Generation Science Standards, particurlarly as they pertain to engineering. The workshop is targeted to senior graduate students, post-docs and early career faculty. The workshop seeks broad participation, especially members of underrepresented groups as defined by NSF (African American, Hispanic, Native American) who may be considering a research or faculty position in the learning sciences.This two-day workshop immediately precedes the LearnLab Summer School (www.learnlab.org/opportunities/summer/).

SCIENCE LEARNING + Virginia Tech: Learning Sciences Visiting Assistant Professor 2014-15 NASA LEARN Teacher Opportunity

Science Learning+ will provide up to $14.4 million to support research into how learning happens outside the classroom, exploring the most effective practices and building the evidence base in this area. The aims are: (1) to learn more about, evaluate, and maximize the impact of informal learning experiences, and (2) to improve understanding of how informal environments may help to widen access to STEM for youth from all backgrounds. We are currently in the process of recruiting interns for our 2014 session.  We would like to work with you on best recruiting practices so that we may continue our tradition of attracting top students who in turn will receive a quality summer experience that combines strong professional work opportunity with an extraordinary travel experience.

NASA’s LEARN Project (Long-term Engagement in Authentic Research) is looking for STEM teachers, grades 6-12, to join a Research Team that will collaborate with NASA scientists on authentic research projects. Selected teachers receive training focused on atmospheric science and become GLOBE certified.

After a 2-week summer on-site training, teachers continue their research through 2015 with virtual Research Team meetings and data presentations, and earn a stipend for participation. Teachers may also submit proposals for travel funding to present their research at related conferences. Application is open to U.S. citizens only. Applications are due April 21, 2014.
