HJR 25- Study of Science, Math, and Technology Education

Delegate Nutter spoke to group about the final recommendations on HJR 25.
Delegate Nutter is asking for STEM professionals to provide him with comments on HJR 25 in order to help him on the ranking processes of HJR 25.

Discussion of the Wide Spread SRP support for: Project Lead the Way (PLTW)
Began in 1987
ODU Is State contact for PLTW
80k to implement in K-8
120k to implement in 9-12
Currently ramping up Bio Tech Course
Top town approach to implementation
Resulted from the NGA Grant
Montgomery County at Blacksburg High School current implementing PLTW
Other recommendations are also listed in the document.
Suggestions:
Possible focus for VT STEM in the future.
Bob Purkey- May be focusing on research of these topics in higher ed.

- Update on Governor’s Career & Technical Academy: NGA Grant Opportunity
Dr. Mark Sanders spoke on a partnership proposal.
George Yakman submitted a partnership proposal.
Montgomery County Public Schools decided not to submit a proposal.
* Delegate Nutter mentioned that NGA grant proposal acceptance may be tied to Gaps Analysis Study.

- Llyn Sharp’s Report on Virginia Association of Science Teacher (VAST)
Reports there is willingness for acceptance for STEM but many do not know what STEM is.
VT STEM may be able make the differance for STEM programs for non- traditional students.
Discussion followed on the perception of AP courses in post secondary schools on acceptance to higher education.
