• Welcome
• VT STEM meetings -- please mark calendars Nov 14, Feb 13, Mar 13, Apr 10
• Group thought it would be fine to change the listserv name to
“VT-STEM-K12-Outreach@listserv.vt.edu”
• Report from Sue Magliaro:
1. Legislative STEM Subcommittee meeting next on 25 Oct. in Fairfax
Evan Glazer, principal at TJ Governor’s School would like to collaborate with STEM outreach programs through the NoVa center.
2. Arts center/complex at VT.  Input on STEM components wanted, what programming and space needs follow from that.  Sue is also involved with the Roanoke Art Museum, and they are interested in STEM
3. Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in STEM education (Engineering and Biological Sciences)
4. MOU with center in South Africa for STEM education across Africa
5. Institutional Performance Standards for VT Charter U. status.  Outreach and K-12 STEM program reporting will be needed..  Drive to standardize statistical reporting so we can better characterize what is going on.  We will see if developing a reporting template is advisable.  Chris Bush in Institutional Research may help.  Need “partnerships that count” = meeting performance measures:
Number of graduates prepared to take STEM teaching positions in PK-12 schools and STEM specialist positions in PK-12 school divisions.
Number of PK-12 teachers and students in the commonwealth served through the university’s educational support programming (graduate courses, continuing education programs, advanced certificate programs).
Number of PK-12 students who successfully matriculate into and complete post-secondary education in STEM fields.
Number of STEM undergraduates who successfully matriculate into and complete graduate programs in STEM education.
Number of youths participating in non-formal and informal STEM-related projects.
• Mark Sanders and John Wells gave an update on the STEM Education ColLaboratory.  They are recruiting grad students for Masters and PhD, as well as a “certificate” in STEM-Ed.  See their summary document.
• Brian Gittens, Outreach and International Affairs:
Brian wants volunteers to help guide a continuing education planning group developing a market research plan for K-12 STEM needs
• Development office and other funding opportunities
Corporate partnerships, Chandrika Rallipalli will be glad to help, she sent along brochures from the VT Foundation.
            - NSF, see listserv email
• Website—we may be able to work with Brian’s group to get some input from K-12 on what would be helpful to them on a VT STEM website.
