    • Update on Governor’s Career & Technical Academy: Pre-Proposal Technical Assistance Meeting on NGA Grant Opportunity

      • 500k NGA awarded to VA
      • Slip in to 6 grants @ 120k each
        • Mission is to support partnerships between business, schools, regional workforce, & higher education.
      • Eligibility- awarded only to partnerships
        • School districts are only allowed one proposal
        • VT can participate in more than one
        • Criteria not final but may be similar to governor schools
      • 20k for planning
        • Full plan needed by May 1, 2008
        • Cost reimbursement
        • Grant can not be use on brick & mortar or equipment
        • Intent to submit by Oct 15th
      • Sectary of Technology Presented a Power Point Presentation and will post on Web.
        • Wants to see online collaboration
        • Incorporative Emerging Technologies
        • Program Expansions
      • Rural communities need access to technologies of collaboration and models of collaboration
      • Jim Carlson was not approached in Richmond about how to involve VT STEM

          • 4h evolving and creating curriculum to include conceptual 21st century skills/youth development.

        • Wants to pilot Agricultural curriculum from 4H
          • Got e-mail from State Department of Education
            • This is a workforce development piece – CTE focus
            • NRCC- pilot for Governors Center for CTE
            • Dual enroll High School seniors in NRCC
          • New River sent People to Richmond for proposal meeting still not sure if they will participate in grant proposal.

          • Technogly to use in exploring careers & creativity
          • The other money comes from work force development WIB

        • This targets students who don’t go to governors schools

        • Are the school systems set for distance learning web based?
        • What is “academy” in CTE world?
          • Academy “concept” is still CTE Center however – transportation- integration in main new High Scholl as separate classrooms but offered to all students in county.
        • So would student apply to attend the “academy”? Jim & Faith think so.

        • In industry 20 years ago these were strategic efforts trying to identify new industries for difficult area and translate into job skills
        • Expanding technology use DDT and we have the ability to deploy across the state.
        • Virtual Education Distance Learning
          • Collaboration on prototypes field test a variety of approaches with in boundaries of job forecast (Weldon Cooper Center)
        • Develop a tool for virtual STEM academies
          • To increase capacity for collaboration across distances and for time squeezed people.
        • Increase awareness and comfort with interactivity across distance and how to use technology to increase learner skills.
      • Governor Schools – Have the latest stuff
        • NRCC- dual enrolment reg. textbook and so the integration of technology is not used much.
        • School networks are so locked down: need to show high value and low risk
      • Rick Weaver Participative Instruction
        • Wants to overcome disparity between High School campuses even between one county
        • Has heard a state push for K-12/Commiunty Colleges & Higher Ed to blur their boundaries so that a kid doesn’t have no experience with Community College or Higher Ed
        • Need assessment to identify skills
          • 3-5 business and their needs
          • Specific “samples” in STEM fields
          • ID high need areas skill sets and job descriptions
        • Interviews with 21st century jobs for what these skills sets are.

        • Summer interns (Seniors and Grads) already worked with local industries (Coring, Goodyear, ect.)
