About VT STEM
Science, technology, engineering, and math education (STEM) are at the forefront of our nation's agenda. Both national and global development and sustainability are contingent upon fostering discovery and development in the STEM disciplines. VT-STEM is focused on building networks within the university and across K-12 communities to enhance the effectiveness of integrated STEM education resulting in improved scientific and technological literacy and the competitiveness of Virginia’s students.
The mission of VT-STEM is to share research and resources among the university, public education, and other partners that will contribute to Virginia’s leadership in K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.
The vision of VT-STEM is for Virginia to be a leader and national model in STEM education by:
- serving as a bridge between the K-12 community and the university;
- partnering with the K-12 community to prepare university students and faculty to participate in outreach efforts;
- facilitating quality K-12 STEM education experiences; and
- collaborating with the K-12 community to enhance teacher preparation and professional development.
Thus, VT-STEM will:
- COORDINATE outreach efforts within the university
- COLLABORATE on outreach efforts with partners outside the university
- SUSTAIN existing outreach efforts and create new outreach programs and products in response to needs of the university and K-12 audiences.
- EVALUATE the impact and effectiveness of our efforts and make scholarly contributions to the body of knowledge about STEM education and outreach.
