The 2007 landmark report Rising Above the Gathering Storm brought Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to the forefront of the nation's educational transformation agenda. On November 15th and 16th, 2009, representatives from Virginia's higher education system, K-12 education system, Governor's office, informal education network, industries and businesses from across the Commonwealth came together at the Governor’s Conference for STEM Education to create a blueprint for Virginia's future success in STEM fields.
The objectives of the conference were:

  • To create a forum that brought together key STEM stakeholders from formal and informal learning environments, government agencies, policymakers, and the corporate sector to advance the conversation initiated by authors of Rising Above the Gathering Storm.
  • To highlight successful efforts across all sectors to showcase the range of opportunities currently available.
  • To extract the principles, policies, and practices that have yielded evidence-based success and to formulate a monograph that can be shared with all stakeholders.
  • To begin the process of creating a statewide blueprint for PK-16 STEM learning both in and out of school.

This site will serve as a repository for the information collected at the conference as well as a hub for the continued efforts of stakeholders in the development of the blueprint.
